Turkish textile sector still ailing despite moderate damage in 2009

The global financial crisis took less of a toll on the Turkish textile sector in 2009 when compared to other sectors and previous predictions, despite the fact that the sector suffered the worst economic downturn in a decade. Authorities cite complaints about a lack of necessary initiatives as a hindrance to their ability to rejuvenate the still-ailing sector, rebounding it to pre-crisis levels.

Deemed one of the most important sectors of the economy by many with its high levels of exports and important contributions to gross domestic product (GDP), the Turkish textile sector lost blood during the crisis due to a steep fall in external and domestic demand, resulting in the closure of many textile companies and layoffs across the country.
